Brand New: CASE Certification and Experiential Training in the CASE Approach
2009 was a great year for us here at TISA with workshops and trainings throughout North America, including numerous presentations at VA centers. The keynote on suicide prevention and the creation of hope, based upon my book on finding resiliency in difficult times, "Happiness Is." has become one of my most popular venues and is truly fun to give.
I am also particularly excited by the recent expansions to our training offerings. In addition to our full-day workshop on suicide assessment, treatment planning, and building resiliency, "Unlocking Suicidal Secrets: New Ideas on Old Problems in Suicide Prevention", we are now offering a brand new full-day experiential course on the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach) which combines principles of microtraining and macrotraining role-playing to bring groups of clinicians to a remarkable level of clinical skill in applying the CASE Approach. Intense, yet great fun. Each participant is involved in nearly twenty role-plays related solely to learning the nuances of the CASE Approach.
In addition we have trained our first set of TISA macrotrainers, who will be able to provide certification in the CASE Approach to individual supervisors and clinicians. The TISA trainers employ macrotraining to create a unique, remarkably practical and intense 3-4 hour training session. The session is individualized with one trainee and one TISA trainer to maximize learning. Participants learn the true ins and outs of effectively using the CASE Approach to uncover suicidal ideation, planning and intent.
By the way, I am looking for new trainers. If you have an interest in potentially becoming a TISA macrotrainer (must have a masters degree, several years of clinical experience post-graduation and love role-playing) please contact me.
Training Physicians, Nurses, Medical Students and Nursing Students in Effective Ways for Collaborating with Patients About Their Medications: the Medication Interest Model (MIM)
Finally, and certainly not least in importance, I am very excited about the continued response to the Medication Interest Model (MIM) as described in the book, "Improving Medication Adherence: How to Talk with Patients About Their Medications.". I had the pleasure of making a twelve-city tour presenting on the MIM to primary care clinicians, that touched down on cities as diverse as San Francisco, Detroit, and New Orleans. I learned a lot at each site and received great interviewing tips from clinicians at every venue, that have helped to keep our collection of MIM interviewing tips growing. Thanks to everyone for the clinical interviewing tips. I should add that we were very grateful, and feel quite lucky, that "Improving Medication Adherence: How to Talk with Patients About Their Medications" was chosen by Doody's for their "Core Titles List" of the most important books for medical and nursing libraries in 2009. Our selection was a most pleasant surprise.
Thanks again to everyone,
Shawn Christopher Shea, M.D.
Director, TISA
