WORKSHOP TITLE:
The Delicate Art of Eliciting Suicidal Ideation

    SPEAKER: Shawn Christopher Shea, M.D.

    FORMAT: Shortened version of suicide assessment package focusing specifically on strategies for eliciting suicidal ideation.

    LENGTH: 1.5 hours


Objectives:

  1. Understand and recognize the following four interviewing techniques for increasing validity: the behavioral incident, gentle assumption, symptom amplification, and denial of the specific.
  2. Understand the theory and practical application of a specific interview strategy for the elicitation of suicidal ideation and behaviors: The Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (the CASE Approach) - Techniques and strategies demonstrated by videotape.
  3. Be able to flexibly utilize the above approach as a sensitive and rapid method of uncovering suicidal ideation and intent in a busy clinic, hospital, or school setting.
