The Art of Making an Axis II Diagnosis in the Initial Interview

    Objectives:

  1. Understand the possibilities and limitations of personality assessment in the initial 60 minute interview.
  2. Understand and utilize the following three techniques for limiting the field of diagnostic possibilities on Axis II during the initial interview: signal symptoms, signal signs, and probe questions.
  3. Utilize a flexible strategy for arriving at a differential diagnosis on Axis II of the DSM-IV, when under the tight time constraints so common to everyday practice (patient videotape shown).
